Visiting the Roman Catacombs

Things to know before buying Rome catacombs tickets

Guided tours are required for most catacombs to protect the sites and give visitors historical context

    • The Capuchin Crypt is the exception—you can visit with just an entry ticket and audio guide, no live guide needed

    • Small-group tours offer a deeper experience, often with fewer than 20 people and more time to ask questions

    • Standard tours are budget-friendly and still include expert commentary, skip-the-line access, and major highlights

    • Book at least two weeks in advance during busy seasons as some catacombs like Domitilla often sell out

    • Many tours include transport, especially useful since catacombs are located outside the city centre

    • Some sites close on specific days such as Callixtus on Wednesdays and Domitilla on Tuesdays

    • Not suitable for everyone as the catacombs have narrow tunnels, stairs, and low lighting; not recommended for those with claustrophobia or mobility issues.
